When your company needs rigging training, you need a program that can teach the group well and manage the training process from start to finish. You also need to know exactly which credential your employees will work toward.
This guide explains what employers should check before booking group rigging training, how NCCER certification works, and what to expect from Rig Right Texas.
Start with the credential your project requires.
Before booking, confirm the credential named in your contract, company policy or project requirements. Ask which rigging level is required and whether the requirement includes a written assessment and practical exam. Record the exact credential name so the training provider can confirm the correct course and testing arrangements.
NCCER and CCO are separate organizations with separate certification programs. Their credentials should not be treated as interchangeable. Rig Right Texas provides NCCER training and assessment services.
What does NCCER rigger certification involve?
NCCER’s rigger certification pathways include a knowledge assessment and a hands-on practical examination. Candidates must successfully complete the requirements for the specific pathway to earn the certification. Completing a prep class alone does not award the certification.
These examinations must be delivered through an appropriately accredited and endorsed NCCER assessment program. Employers can verify credentials using the employee’s NCCER number. See NCCER’s explanation of credentials and certifications.
Choose a program with experienced instructors.
A strong rigging program should explain both the principles and their use in the field. Employees need clear instruction in load calculations, sling angles, rigging equipment and load control, along with time to work through examples and practice.
At Rig Right Texas, Mike Sanchez brings 20 years of refinery experience to rigging instruction. He is an NCCER Instructor, Advanced Rigger and Practical Examiner. Meet Mike and learn about his experience.
What should group rigging training cover?
Course content depends on the rigging level. When comparing programs, ask for a course outline and confirm how classroom instruction, hands-on training and testing are organized.
- Rigging equipment: slings, shackles, hooks, hitches and equipment selection.
- Equipment inspection: recognizing damage and knowing when equipment should be removed from service.
- Loads and balance: load weight, center of gravity and load control.
- Rigging math: sling angles, sling tension and load calculations appropriate to the course.
- Practical training: supervised work with rigging equipment.
- Assessment preparation: review and practice for the applicable written and practical requirements.
Basic Rigger and Advanced Rigger group training.
Rig Right Texas offers NCCER Basic Rigger and Advanced Rigger training for employer groups.
Basic Rigger instruction covers rigging fundamentals, equipment and safe lifting practices. Advanced Rigger instruction covers advanced rigging principles, calculations and practical applications. Confirm the course and certification requirements your company needs before scheduling the group.
Can a provider handle your entire group?
Large-group training takes organization as well as instruction. Ask how the provider will schedule the class, arrange hands-on practice and coordinate testing appointments. A clear schedule helps your company plan employee attendance and time away from work.
Rig Right Texas has delivered employer training and can organize training for large groups. We offer group scheduling, employer invoicing and a direct employer contact. You can arrange training for your workforce without asking every employee to manage a separate booking.
Confirm the location, schedule and quote.
Our training center is in Portland, Texas, near Corpus Christi. Ask about onsite availability if you want training at your company’s location. The course, equipment, location and group size affect what can be arranged.
Before approving a quote, confirm the course, employee count, dates, location, total cost and what testing is included. Ask how practical examinations will be scheduled and how your company can verify the credentials employees earn.
Training, certification and employer qualification.
Training teaches the material. Certification documents successful completion of a certification program. Employer qualification also considers whether a worker can perform the assigned rigging work safely.
OSHA explains that a rigger’s qualifications must match the particular work. A credential does not establish that a worker is qualified for every rigging task. Review the OSHA qualified rigger fact sheet alongside your project and company requirements.
