If you are looking at rigger jobs and keep seeing Basic Rigger, Advanced Rigger or NCCER required, it can get confusing fast.
You do not need to take the highest-level class just because it sounds better. You need the level that matches the work you already know and what the employer is asking for.
Start with Basic Rigger if you are still building your foundation.
NCCER Basic Rigger training is the better starting point if you are newer to rigging, have limited hands-on experience or your employer specifically told you to get Basic Rigger.
Basic Rigger focuses on the skills you need before moving into more complex lifts, including rigging hardware, slings, inspections, hand signals and basic load handling.
- You are new to rigging.
- You have worked around rigging but still need a stronger foundation.
- You need help with the math.
- Your employer asked for Basic Rigger.
- You want hands-on practice before testing.
Advanced Rigger is for people who already know the work.
NCCER Advanced Rigger training is for experienced riggers who are ready for more difficult rigging work and advanced assessment preparation.
Advanced Rigger covers harder topics such as sling tension, center of gravity, load calculations, lift planning and more complex rigging situations.
- You already have strong field experience.
- You understand basic slings, hardware and inspections.
- You have worked around more complex lifts.
- Your employer specifically requires Advanced Rigger.
- You need help preparing for the written or hands-on assessment.
Do not choose Advanced just because you want the higher-paying job.
An employer is still going to expect you to know the work.
If you have never rigged a load, taking an Advanced Rigger prep class does not suddenly replace field experience. Start where your experience actually is, learn it well and move up from there.
Already know the work and only need the test?
You may not need a full class.
If you already have the experience and your employer only needs you to complete the NCCER assessment or practical, start with our NCCER Assessment Center.
Ask the employer exactly what they need before you schedule anything. Find out whether they want Basic Rigger, Advanced Rigger, the written assessment, the hands-on practical or both.
