How to Apply for Your Texas Apprentice Electrician License
Want to start working in the electrical trade in Texas? You do not need to be a journeyman to begin. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) issues an Apprentice Electrician license that allows electrical work under the required general supervision.
What is an apprentice electrician license?
It is an individual state license—not an NCCER credential and not a journeyman license. Except for specific exemptions, electrical work in Texas requires a license. An apprentice electrician works under the general supervision of a Master Electrician, Journeyman Electrician, or Residential Wireman, as allowed by state rules.
Why apply?
It lets you seek supervised apprenticeship work requiring the Texas credential and start gaining on-the-job experience toward future licensing. Getting the license does not guarantee employment or authorize unsupervised electrical work.
Step-by-step: apply through TDLR
- Open the official TDLR application page. Read eligibility and instructions directly from the state.
- Complete the online application. Enter your accurate personal information and answer all background questions truthfully.
- Pay the $20 nonrefundable application fee. TDLR currently lists no prior experience or exam requirement for the Apprentice Electrician license.
- Watch for your temporary license or application status. TDLR says eligible online applicants who report no criminal convictions may automatically receive a temporary license. Other applications may require review.
- Work within your license and supervision rules. Keep track of your experience and renew your license each year.
Fees and procedures are subject to state changes; always confirm with TDLR before applying.
